Oy mame, bin ikh farlibt!
First single from the new Baba Yaga album Odiseja released!
After two years of waiting, the time has finally come: Vienna’s rising stars of the world music scene, Baba Yaga, will present their second album Odiseja this year. Now comes the first taste: “Oy mame, bin ikh farlibt.”
Anyone who speaks German will understand the Yiddish title. A young girl loses her heart to a violinist—quietly and entirely to herself. The song tells of the dizzying feeling of first love, of uncertainty and longing at the same time. It was composed exactly 90 years ago by American composer Abraham Ellstein and is part of the Yiddish musical Yidl mit Fidl (1936).
Baba Yaga draws on tradition while simultaneously creating a contemporary, fresh, and powerful masterpiece clearly rooted in the spirit of the 2020s.
About the album Odiseja (2026)
Odiseja is a musical journey—adventurous, moving, full of highs and lows. The album will be released in October 2026: lightness meets melancholy, joy meets depth. The repertoire combines original compositions with selected traditional pieces. The cultural and linguistic diversity of the band members shapes an authentic sound with a strong affinity for Eastern European influences: Balkan, Klezmer, Gypsy Jazz, and oriental nuances.
The term Odiseja—Slavic for “Odyssey”—refers to the mythical journey of Odysseus, marked by danger, longing, friendship, and temptation. Inspired by this legendary voyage, Baba Yaga embarks on its own Odiseja—a musical and personal journey of discovery. Encounters with different people, languages, and cultures shape their shared path and flow into their sound: music that navigates between tradition and new beginnings, between home and distance.
The result is emotional and virtuosic original compositions in seven languages: Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Yiddish, Romani, Greek, French, Italian, and Spanish—creating a world music crossover that transcends boundaries.
